Title: Transcendent Fusion: John Grillo’s Tantra Abstractions.

Delve into the mesmerizing world of John Grillo, a renowned artist whose unique artistic journey has left an indelible mark on the art scene. Grillo’s artistic education took him through esteemed institutions such as the Hartford School of Fine Arts, California School of Fine Arts, and the tutelage of Hans Hoffman from 1948 to 1951, shaping his artistic sensibilities.

In 1961, Grillo’s debut exhibition at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York City made waves, despite being held on a stormy and challenging day. The artist’s bold use of vibrant yellow on the canvas had such a profound impact that it caught the attention of Donald Judd, who described the experience as being enveloped in a “room full of sunshine.”

Critics, including April Kingsley, have lauded Grillo’s work as a collage of spiraling forms, dazzling color chords, dynamic diagonals, and jump-cut spatial locations. His art embodies fast rhythms, fleeting fragmentary shapes, and an inherent hedonism and joy reminiscent of the best works by Hans Hoffman in the 1960s, with an added layer of sensuousness.

Description

John Grillo studied at Hartford School of Fine Arts, California School of Fine Arts, and with Hans Hoffman from 1948-51.

John Grillo’s first show was at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York City on a stormy, and by all accounts miserable day in 1961. However, Grillo’s strong application of bright yellow upon the canvas had such a great impact on Donald Judd, who reviewed the exhibition, that he wrote. ” it was like a room full of sunshine”

Critic April Kingsley described his work as “a collage of spiraling forms, dazzling color chords, dynamic diagonals, and jump-cut spatial locations, fast rhythms, fleeting fragmentary shapes…as hedonistic and full of joy as the best Hoffman’s of the sixties, and even more sensuous. “
