Horst Antes is a German painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his distinctive figurative style and exploration of human forms. He gained international recognition in the 1960s for developing his signature “Kopffüßler” (Head-Footer) figures, which feature large heads and compact bodies, blending abstraction with figuration. These figures became a recurring motif in his paintings, sculptures, and prints, reflecting influences from German Expressionism, indigenous art, and modernist abstraction.
Antes studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he was mentored by HAP Grieshaber. His early works were influenced by Willem de Kooning and Jean Dubuffet, but he later developed a unique visual language that combined bold colors, stylized figures, and a deep interest in mythology and anthropology.
Throughout his career, Antes worked in various mediums, including painting, ceramics, and monumental outdoor sculptures. His art has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including the Documenta exhibitions in Kassel and prominent German and international museums.
Today, Antes remains an influential figure in post-war German art, with his works held in major collections across Europe and beyond.
